This washed coffee comes from more than 232 smallholder farmers in the Dumerso region of Ethiopia, where coffee cultivation has been passed down through generations. Grown on small family plots surrounding St. George’s Church and the nearby village of Chito, the coffee reflects the character of a true community lot.
Ripe cherries are carefully hand-picked and delivered to the Dumerso Washing Station, operated by sisters Hirut and Mahder Berhanu. Since partnering with Swift Coffee Sourcing in 2019–2020, Hirut and Mahder have become known for their integrity, quality-focused production, and commitment to their community. After pulping, the coffee undergoes a 36–48 hour fermentation before being thoroughly washed and dried on raised beds under the sun for 9–11 days. Throughout drying, the parchment is constantly turned and hand-sorted to promote even drying and quality consistency.
Beyond coffee production, the Berhanu sisters continue to invest in the Dumerso community through projects including a local clinic and school library, with plans to build a daycare facility to better support working families. Their work not only uplifts hundreds of local farming families, but also highlights the impact of women-led leadership within Ethiopia’s coffee sector.
