Ethiopia Uraga Goro Muda

Uraga Goro Muda comes from Haro Wachu kebele in the Uraga district of Guji, in Ethiopia’s Oromia region. Guji is one of the country’s oldest and most respected coffee-growing areas.

This remote community faces increasingly unpredictable rainfall, with rains that now stretch beyond the traditional season. During harvest from December through February, producers work quickly during clear weather windows to pick and deliver cherries before the rains return. Farms sit 30 to 45 minutes from the collection point, connected by unpaved roads that often require transport by horse, mule, or donkey.

Coffee is grown using traditional intercropping practices. False banana trees, maize, and native shade trees provide shade, while the region’s sandy loam soil offers natural fertility without added fertilizers. More than 360 smallholder producers contribute cherries to the washing station.

The farmers of Goro Muda, part of the Oromo community, are deeply rooted in coffee tradition. Despite infrastructure challenges, they are recognized throughout specialty coffee for their knowledge, resilience, and commitment to exceptional quality.
