Mexico Sochiapam

The Sochiapam municipality is one of Oaxaca’s most remote and prolific coffee-growing regions, perched at high elevation and reached only after hours of travel—first by road, then by foot. Known for its dense forests and rich biodiversity, it also encompasses a protected natural reserve where all forms of commercial activity—including logging, agriculture, hunting, and fishing—are strictly prohibited. Local producers, young and old, who speak Chinanteco and Spanish, are deeply committed to preserving the land. Most work small farms of just 1 to 2 hectares, and many rely on mules to transport coffee and other crops. Sochiapam’s strong infrastructure—including hospitals and schools—helps curb outward migration and supports a vibrant, intergenerational coffee-growing community.

Historically focused on volume over quality, Sochiapam’s coffee potential remained untapped until our partners at Red Fox began sourcing here in 2022. After identifying standout characteristics in early samples, they partnered with local producers to implement best practices in selective harvesting, fermentation, drying, and varietal selection.

Today, Red Fox works closely with producers each harvest, providing hands-on feedback and support to improve both quality and yield—fostering a long-term, quality-driven partnership built on shared growth and trust.
